It’s a 2025 midsize crossover, 4,780 mm long, 1,910 mm wide, 1,664 mm tall, on a 2,840 mm wheelbase, and it’s the product of SAIC working with Huawei under the Shangjie brand. 1,910 mm of width is the number that will define your showroom conversations. It’s wide. Genuinely wide. In a country with generous roads and generous parking, that reads as a premium, substantial car. In a city with narrow parking bays and tight multi-storey car parks, it’s the thing customers will mention. Both reactions are valid. Know which market you’re selling into. The styling is measured rather than loud. Clean surfaces, a smooth nose with a light bar, flush-ish handles, and a roofline that tapers gently. It’s a car designed to look expensive without shouting, and it largely succeeds — which matters, because this thing is aimed squarely at the Model Y and it needs to hold its own in a lineup.

Aesthetically, honestly, it’s not distinctive. Put it next to three other Chinese midsize crossovers and you’d need a moment. That’s a real weakness in markets where buyers shop on visual identity and where brand recognition is still being built. It’s a competent design, not a memorable one. The interior is where SAIC has put the money, and I’d steer your salespeople there. Wheel options vary and there’s a panoramic glass roof on higher trims. Glass roofs look fantastic in a showroom and bake cars in hot climates. If your market is hot, order the shade or spec the solid roof. This is not a small point.

Interior

The interior is where the HUAWEI connection actually shows up, and it’s the strongest argument you have. The cockpit runs Huawei’s HarmonyOS-based system. In the Chinese market that means a genuinely fast, well-integrated, phone-connected ecosystem. In export markets, here’s the honest position: some of the deepest integration features depend on Huawei’s service ecosystem and won’t function, or will function differently, outside it. App availability, voice assistant language coverage and connected services all need checking on the exact build you order. Do that in writing before you commit to volume.

Beyond the software, the hardware is good. The 2,840 mm wheelbase delivers rear knee room that comfortably embarrasses the Model Y, which is the comparison every customer will make. Three adults across the back is realistic, not a stretch. Seating is comfortable on longer runs, which matters because this is a car people will buy to travel in. Materials are convincing. Soft-touch surfaces where you touch them, real stitching, solid switch action. It doesn’t feel like a cost-engineered car and I’d argue it’s the interior that justifies the positioning, more than the badge or the styling.

Practicality in the SAIC H5 is decent rather than exceptional. Boot volume is fine for a family, less than you’d expect given the exterior bulk, because the wheelbase is doing the work for rear passengers instead. Fold the seats and it swallows bulky loads. Fine for a household, not the class leader for cargo. Cabin refinement in the SAIC H5 is good at town speeds. At motorway speed there’s some wind noise around the mirrors and A-pillars. Acceptable, not class-leading. Worth flagging to customers who do a lot of trunk-road driving.

Powertrain and Chassis

Two completely different propositions sit under one badge, and getting this right is the single most important commercial decision you’ll make with the SAIC H5. The BEV versions use a 150 kW or 180 kW — 201 or 241 hp — motor with a 64.6 kWh or 80 kWh battery, giving 535 km or 655 km CLTC. Straightforward, quick enough for the class, and the 80 kWh version is a genuinely long-legged family EV in urban and suburban use.

The REEV version is the one I’d spend your time on. It uses a 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol generator making 72 kW — 97 hp — that never drives the wheels. It only makes electricity. The wheels are driven by a 150 kW — 201 hp — rear motor, fed by a 32.6 kWh battery. Claimed combined range is 1,360 km.

Now let’s be clear about what that 1,360 km number is. It’s a combined figure, part battery, part generated from petrol. The battery alone is 32.6 kWh, which is small, and in everyday use the REEV version behaves like an electric car with a short electric range that happens to carry its own power station. That’s the correct way to think about it, and the correct way to sell it. Where that architecture wins is obvious and worth stating to dealers plainly. In markets where public charging is thin, unreliable, or nonexistent outside the capital, a REEV removes the single biggest objection to electric cars. The customer drives electric day to day and burns petrol on the long run, with no range anxiety and no dependency on infrastructure you don’t control.

Where it loses: the petrol generator adds weight, complexity and a service item that a BEV doesn’t have. Fuel consumption generated this way can be unremarkable, particularly at sustained high speed. And if your market has good charging, the BEV versions are simply the better product. I would not sell a REEV to a customer who has a home charger and never leaves the city.

One more caveat I’d put in writing. The HUAWEI-branded advanced driver assistance features that are a headline selling point in China are, in export markets, restricted or unavailable because of mapping, regulatory approval and calibration constraints. Do not build your marketing on them. Confirm exactly what is active on your build, in writing, and market only that. This is the most common way dealers get burned on China-sourced high-tech cars.

Chassis is independent and comfort-focused. Ride quality is good, body control is adequate for a car of this size, and the steering is light. It’s a family crossover, tuned as one. Nothing here will delight an enthusiast, and nothing here will disappoint a family. A note on servicing that dealers should plan for. The REEV version needs capability in both high-voltage electrics and conventional petrol engine work. If your workshop has been tooling up only for BEVs, budget for the petrol side before you take REEV volume.
