People look up when the Leopard 8 comes in. And honestly, you’d expect that from something this size — but it earns the stare. This isn’t one of those crossovers that grew plastic cladding and called it a weekend. It’s body-on-frame, proper, from Fangchengbao, which is BYD’s off-road brand nobody outside China had heard of two years ago. The clever part, the bit that’s hard to explain in a spec sheet, is that it’s a plug-in hybrid sitting on a ladder chassis. So you take it up a rock shelf at dawn and plug it into a wall before bed. You don’t get that mix often.

Exterior

The first thing you notice is how it stands. Tall. Arches cut square, not round. I’ll be straight — the boxy look isn’t only for show. It gives you headroom inside, and when you’re picking a line through something ugly, a flat-sided truck is just easier to place than a curvy one.

Nose is blunt, almost flat. Wide grille, C-shaped lights that you can still read with dust on the lens. People underestimate lights until they’re on an unlit trail at midnight and the cheap SUV ahead is basically invisible. That’s when this stuff pays.

Ground clearance is the real article. Skid plates under there, approach and departure angles a person would actually use, not a number for the brochure. Roof’s flat and rated for a tent or a rack. You’re not buying a showpiece with this one. You’re buying a base camp that happens to have wheels.

Interior

Inside it stays calm, which you want after the outside promises so much. Screens are big but not busy, and — credit where it’s due — the drive-mode buttons survived. Whoever specced it remembered that gloves exist. Try a touchscreen with frozen fingers and you’ll know why that matters.

Seats sit upright and hold you when the ground tilts. Second row folds flat, floor runs long. Third row? Kids, short trips. Adults will live, but not happily, on a long run. Materials are a notch above what folks expect from a Chinese off-roader — soft up top, rubber bins that catch a spill instead of hiding it. There’s even a 220V socket in the cabin. Small thing, but if you’re running a fridge or a laptop off-grid, it’s the thing you remember.

Powertrain and Chassis

This is where the money goes. Plug-in hybrid. A PHEV. I’ll say it plainly because people mix this up: not a range-extender. The engine turns the wheels through the gearset. It is not bolted to a generator and told to make electricity. That distinction sounds small until you’re towing or climbing in heat, and then it isn’t small.

A 2.0T petrol works with motors front and rear, so you get four-wheel hybrid pull and electric torque from a stop — that shove is what walks you up a greasy incline without the wheels spinning. The ladder frame doesn’t flex the way a unibody does, and it’ll take abuse that cracks the other type. Locking diffs, crawl control, the rough-stuff kit is all there.

Is the Leopard 8 a true off-road vehicle or a soft SUV? It is a true off-roader. Body-on-frame construction, low-range-capable hybrid drive, and locking differentials put it in the hardcore camp, not the crossover camp.

What is the difference between this PHEV and a range-extender (REEV)? A REEV uses the engine only to generate electricity; the wheels are always turned by a motor. The Leopard 8 is a PHEV where the engine can also drive the wheels directly through a mechanical path. That is a real distinction for performance and towing.

How many seats does it have? It is offered as a six- or seven-seat layout depending on market configuration. The third row suits children or short trips.
