IM Motors pulled the wraps off the LS8 at the 2026 Beijing show and put it on sale in China on 16 April 2026 — a big, calm, tech-heavy SUV that sits above the LS7 in the line and answers to a different name the moment it leaves the country. The IM LS8 is built to be a long-haul family hauler first, not a city runabout, and that intent shows in every panel. It’s a range-extender, not a pure battery car, which is the one thing worth settling before anything else. SAIC builds it under the IM brand, and because the badge and a few specs get shuffled market by market, what a buyer ends up with really does depend on where the ship docks.
Exterior
Long, low-key, almost restrained for something this size — the LS8 reads more limousine than off-roader. Front is the closed face you’d expect on an EV, with slim daytime runners and sharp main clusters tucked into the bumper, and round the back there’s a full-width light bar that visually stretches the body the way these big SUVs all do now. Hidden handles, 20-inch wheels as standard with 21s and 22s on the options list.
Dimensions, since everyone asks those first: 5,085 mm long, 2,000 wide, 1,807 tall on a 3,060 mm wheelbase — that’s full-size territory, past a BMW X5 or a GLE on the wheelbase alone, and the bit I’d actually point out to a customer is how that length never feels heavy once you’re moving. For the IM LS8 the wheelbase is what sells the cabin, not the badge. Five colours run from Pamir Grey through Olympus Black, Chogori Silver, Alps White to Bled Green. Tow hooks and the electrical connector are there if a market wants them.
Interior
Calmer in here than the shell outside would have you expect. That 27.1-inch 5K MiniLED screen wraps the driver with the cluster built in, and a 15.6-inch 3K panel sits ahead of the passenger, both on a Qualcomm 8295P so nothing lags; wireless CarPlay and the rest come as standard depending on market, and — the bit worth a demo rather than a sentence — a 21.5-inch roof screen drops down for the second row. Try explaining that to a family buyer and you’ll see why it lands.
Space is the real pitch. Five seats or a six-seat layout with captain’s chairs, and the sixer flips into a wide four-seat mode when you want the room. Le Corbusier-branded electric sofa seats up front do heat, vent and massage, there’s a 12.3-litre hot-and-cold fridge, floor heating, and a 25-speaker B&O system if the customer ticks that box. Boot holds six 28-inch cases flat with the bench up, which is honestly more than most will ever use and exactly the number a dealer should quote.
Powertrain and Chassis
A battery first, then a generator — the LS8 is a REEV, so the 1.5-litre “Zephyr” turbo never turns the wheels, it just charges. Rear-drive cars take a 52 kWh pack on a single 230 kW motor for 355 km CLTC electric; step up to the 66 Ultra and you get a 66 kWh pack with a front motor joining in for 390 kW and 670 Nm combined, 430 km electric, and a 0–100 of 4.7 seconds, which is quick and honestly more than the school run needs. With the 60-litre tank topped and the battery full, total range runs to 1,605 km on CLTC — call that around 1,200 in the real world, still Melbourne to Sydney and then some.
Both sit on the 800V platform, and that’s where the LS8 earns its keep: 30 to 80% eats 12 minutes on a decent DC charger, so a coffee covers it. Fuel-burn in the extended case lands near 2.5 L/100 km combined, and the engine takes 91RON, which matters wherever cheap regular is the norm.
Underneath there’s the Lingxi digital chassis — front double wishbone, rear multi-link, single-chamber air suspension and CDC as standard across the board, which is unusual at this price and shows up in how flat it stays through a bend for something standing this tall. The headline is four-wheel steer-by-wire: rear wheels pivot to 24 degrees, so a 5-metre SUV turns in 4.85 metres, tighter than plenty of hatchbacks, and Continental’s brake-by-wire does the stopping. IM AD, co-developed with Momenta, runs a 520-line LiDAR and an Nvidia Thor chip for city and highway assist, and that’s the part each export market trims differently, so we check per destination.
One more thing worth keeping straight: a pure-electric LS8 has been spotted in China’s MIIT filings but isn’t confirmed for sale, so for now treat the car as the range-extender and ask before quoting a BEV version to a customer.
FAQ
Is the IM LS8 a pure electric car or a range extender? A range extender — a REEV, so one battery, motors on the axles, and a 1.5-litre petrol generator that charges rather than drives. The confusion is fair enough, because IM’s smaller LS7 is a full BEV and the two get mixed up. If your customer wants no engine at all, the LS7 is the cleaner answer today; a BEV LS8 has only appeared in filings, not at a dealer.
How far does it go, and how long does charging take? CLTC gives 355 km electric on the 52 kWh rear-drive and 430 on the 66 kWh all-wheel-drive, with total range to 1,605 km once the generator’s in play; the real-world figure sits closer to 1,200, and that’s the one to quote where WLTP or local tests apply. Charging is 30 to 80% in about 12 minutes on 800V DC, 6.6 kW-ish on AC.
Why is it called MG IM8 outside China? Same car, different letters on the tailgate. IM sells it as the LS8 at home and as the MG IM8 in markets like Australia and Thailand, under MG’s premium IM sub-brand, purely a naming move — body, platform and part numbers carry over, and only the badge and the local spec sheet change.
