The Deepal G318 wears its ambition on the outside — square, tall, and built to be mistaken for something with a ladder frame, though it actually sits on a stiff unibody with proper off-road geometry underneath. Changan put the car under its Deepal brand, the same new-energy arm that sells the S07 and L07, and the G318 is the one they aimed straight at the Prado-and-Defender crowd. It left China as the Deepal G318 and, in export markets, the badge reads DEEPAL rather than the domestic Shenlan — same car, same part numbers, just a different word on the tailgate.

What you’re looking at is a range-extender, full stop. There’s no plain battery version of the G318, no BEV twin sitting next to it in the lineup, so if a customer wants plug-in-and-only-plug-in, this isn’t that car. A 1.5-litre turbo four burns petrol purely to make electricity, the motors do every bit of the driving, and you fill it like a normal car when the battery runs low.

Exterior

Boxy on purpose, with barely any overhang front or rear, and that’s what gives it the presence rather than any styling flourish. Up front there’s a wide blacked-out bumper, C-shaped LED daytime running lights set into square housings, and a blanked panel where a grille would normally sit — nothing to breathe through because there’s nothing breathing. The roof carries a standard rack, and the upper trims bolt on spotlights and a full professional rack for the overlanding types.

Round the back the tailgate swings sideways instead of lifting, with a full-size spare mounted on it, the kind of detail old-school 4×4 buyers actually notice. Wheel sizes run 18s on chunky 255/65 rubber through to 20-inch wheels depending on market, and the arches are flared with thick black cladding so the stance reads wider than the tape measure says.

Size, since that’s the first thing anyone asks: 5,010 mm long, 1,985 wide, 1,895 tall on a 2,880 mm wheelbase, the 2026 update stretching the body to 5,125 mm and the width to 2,025 without touching the wheelbase — so the cabin stays the same, the overhangs just grow. Ground clearance sits at 210 mm and rises to 240 with the air suspension fitted, the approach angle is 27 degrees and the departure 31, and wading depth runs to about 600 mm, which is the figure I’d quote before anyone takes it through a river crossing.

Interior

Quieter in here than the slab-sided exterior hints at. The centre screen is a 14.6-inch unit fixed to the dash with a 10.25-inch digital cluster behind the wheel, and — the bit I’d actually point out to a customer — the layout keeps physical controls for the drive modes and off-road page rather than burying everything in the touchscreen. Try changing terrain mode with gloves on in a snowfield and you’ll see why that counts.

Space is the G318’s quiet strength. The 2,880 mm wheelbase leaves a flat floor and a boot that reads 818 litres with the bench up, climbing past 1,700 once the rear folds, and the front seats flatten right out into a bed for the camping crowd. Materials are faux leather where you’d touch them, the front pair heat, ventilate and massage on upper trims, and there’s a 16-speaker system that’s genuinely good rather than just loud.

Two things worth demonstrating instead of describing: the 540-degree camera with its transparent-chassis view, and the off-road display that reads out pitch and roll live. Wireless charging sits at 50W up front, there’s a panoramic sunroof, and the whole cabin runs Deepal OS with L2 assistance handling adaptive cruise, lane keeping and automatic emergency braking.

Powertrain and Chassis

Range-extender and nothing else — the Deepal G318 has a 1.5T engine, but that engine never turns the wheels, it just charges.

The car arrives in two drive layouts. Rear-drive means a single motor on the back axle rated 185 kW, or 252 PS, plus 310 Nm, working off an 18.99 kWh pack in the entry car or a 35.07 kWh unit further up, good for 100 to 190 km of pure electric range on CLTC; call that a leisurely 8.3 seconds to 100, which is honest for a body this tall and this heavy. The 1.5T generator makes 110 kW on its own and sips fuel only when the battery asks it to.

Step up to the all-wheel-drive car and a front motor joins in for a combined 316 kW (430 PS) and 572 Nm, with the 35.07 kWh LFP pack behind it and 174 to 184 km of electric range; that works out at 6.3 seconds to 100 and a combined reach past 1,000 km on CLTC, so the range-anxiety conversation simply doesn’t come up. A 60-litre tank backs the generator, DC charging does 30 to 80% in around half an hour, and there’s 6 kW of vehicle-to-load for the campsite.

Underneath there are double wishbones up front and a five-link independent rear, which is the setup you want for keeping a tall SUV flat, and the upper trims add air suspension with dampers that read the road and level the body at a button press. A mechanical rear diff lock is standard across the range, tank turn spins the car on its own axis in tight trails, and the wading radar plus hill descent and creep mode round out the off-road kit. No low-range box, so pitch it as a serious trail SUV and stop short of calling it a rock crawler — that talk goes badly once the photos come back.

FAQ

Is the Deepal G318 a range extender or a pure electric car? A range extender — a REEV, to use the term. A 1.5T petrol engine acts only as a generator while the electric motors drive the wheels, so you get a plug to charge at home and a fuel tank for when you don’t. There’s no battery-only BEV version of the G318, so if a customer specifically wants a pure EV, point them at the Deepal S07 instead.

How far does it go on electric, and how do you charge it? CLTC gives 100 to 190 km of electric range depending on the battery, with the all-wheel-drive car landing at 174 to 184, and combined range passes 1,000 km once the generator joins in. You charge on AC or DC like any EV — 30 to 80% eats about half an hour on DC, 6.6 kW on AC — and the 1.5T tops the battery up on the move, so a long haul needs a fuel stop, not a plug.

What are the off-road numbers that matter? Approach is 27 degrees, departure 31, ground clearance 210 mm rising to 240 with air suspension, and wading sits near 600 mm. It’s a genuine trail SUV, not a stripped mall crawler, though I wouldn’t sell it as a hardcore rock crawler given there’s no low-range transfer case.
