I spent two days in a holding yard outside Liuzhou, walking around the Baojun Yunhai EV and poking at trim gaps with a torch. First impression, and I’ll be blunt: it looks ordinary. That is a compliment. SGMW did not build a concept car here. Good. Anybody who has watched a clever-looking C-segment SUV die on a dealer lot knows exactly what I mean, and if you are the importer holding that stock, you are the one who eats the loss. Ask yourself which of those two cars you would rather have on your books in year three.

The Baojun Yunhai EV slides into your world without asking you to change it. 4541 mm long. 1880 mm wide. 1608 mm tall. A 2750 mm wheelbase. Four numbers, all of them familiar, and that familiarity is the product. Nothing here forces you to re-cut your workshop layout. It fits the parking bays you already paint, the service lifts you already own, the container slots you already book. That is not a small point when you are landing a first container.

The face is calm. Slim lamps, a closed-off nose, a lower intake that reads as bumper rather than grille. Round the back there is a full-width light bar, and every Chinese electric SUV since about 2022 has had one, so it will not win you a design award. It photographs beautifully, though. Showroom traffic reacts to it, and that is what the light bar is actually for.

Wheels run 17 to 18 inches by trim. Roof rails stay on, so roof boxes and bike racks stay on the table for families. Approach angles are modest. City and suburb machine. No point pretending otherwise.

One flag before you order, and it is a small one with a long tail. The chrome-effect trim on the door handles will cloud in coastal humidity and under hard UV. Your customers will not notice it at handover. They will notice it in month eighteen, and they will mention it to you, not to us.

Interior

Space is the pitch here, not materials, and that 2750 mm wheelbase is doing real work. Rear knee room sits close to cars a class above. The floor is flat, genuinely flat, which means three adults share the bench without a fight. I do not get to say that often about this segment. For a one-car family, that decides the sale. Not the screen. Not the badge. The back seat.

Boot volume is quoted around 400 litres with the seats up and climbs well past 1000 once the bench folds. Business maths, that. A ride-hailing operator loads and unloads forty times a day and will notice the height of the load lip, the shape of the aperture, the depth behind the second row. Then you touch things. Dash top is soft-touch. Fine. Lower door cards are hard plastic, and they sound hard when you knock on them.

I would not hide that from a dealer, because a customer finds it in about thirty seconds. A salesperson caught covering for it loses the room, and on a new badge you cannot buy that back. Equipment is generous for the money. Large central touchscreen, digital cluster, wireless charging on most trims, plus a 360-degree camera I would actually use in Lagos or Nairobi traffic.

Two things I would flag. Climate controls live inside the touchscreen, so the physical buttons are gone, and some buyers will hate it. Not a deal-breaker. A talking point, and a bad one to walk into cold. Second, and this one bites: the infotainment stack is tuned for the Chinese ecosystem. Voice control and navigation need localisation before your launch, not after. I have watched launch dates slip a full quarter because somebody treated that as a two-week job. Budget for it in your opening plan.

Powertrain and Chassis

One motor. Front wheels. 150 kW and 310 Nm. That is the whole story. Do not let anyone sell the Baojun Yunhai EV to you as a performance SUV. It is not. Acceleration off the line is brisk, because electric motors are, and then it tapers the way every single-motor front-drive car tapers. Predictable. For a 120 km-a-day delivery fleet, a ride-hailing operator or a one-car family, the layout is right. And it keeps the bill of materials lean, which is how the price stays where it is.

Battery choice is the part an importer should care about more than any other. CLTC 500 km on the standard pack. CLTC 600 km on the larger one. Read both with a cold eye. CLTC is a Chinese cycle, more optimistic than WLTP, and WLTP is more optimistic than what a driver actually sees in a wet February. My working rule is a quarter off for a mixed European or Latin American duty cycle. More if your customers live at sustained highway speed.

Tell your dealers that on day one. It buys you trust you will need later, and it costs you nothing now. DC fast charging is supported. The usual caveat applies: peak rate holds for a slice of the curve and then falls away. Size your customer expectations around the average, not the peak.

Ride was the priority here, not lap times. MacPherson struts up front, torsion beam or multi-link at the back depending on the variant you order. Lean on it through a long corner and you will find roll. Nobody shopping this segment cares. What they ask about is kerb weight and consumption. The car is light enough to post decent efficiency in stop-start traffic, which is where your fleet actually lives.
