Look, the BAW 212 isn’t trying to be clever. It’s a boxy 4×4 that feels pulled from another decade, then someone dropped a modern engine under the hood and called it a day. BAW — that’s Beijing Automobile Works — turned the old 212 name into its own brand back in 2024, and the T01 is what’s actually shipping out of China now. If you’ve ever wanted a Defender-ish trail truck without the Defender price tag, this is the sort of thing you end up looking at.

Exterior

The front is the giveaway. You’ve got two round headlights flanking a three-slot grille, and those weird raised bumps on the hood (they used to be “air-defense lights”) are still there, just with LEDs now. It’s a square body, no apologizing for it — flared arches, a tailgate that swings open to the side, and the spare bolted right onto the back. Looks like it means business, because it does.

It’s not a huge truck, but it stands tall. About 4.7 metres long and just under 1.9 wide, sitting on a 2,860 mm wheelbase, and if you add the roof rack you’re looking at over two metres of height. Paint’s nothing fancy: white, a couple of greens, grey, black. The base wheels are 265/65 R18, though the off-road trims throw on a snorkel and a winch if you’re serious about it.

Interior

Inside is cleaner than the outside lets on. There’s a 12.3-inch screen in the middle and a 10.25-inch digital dash, leather seats, and a wireless charger up front that does 50 W. Five doors, five seats, and the back row folds down when you need the space.

Don’t go in expecting acres of room. At 4.7 metres it’s actually a bit tight for a 4×4, and anyone tall will fight for the front seat. But the layout is dead simple, the wheel’s a normal three-spoke, and the higher trims give you a 360 camera plus seats that heat, cool, and even massage. Fine for a trail week and the occasional trip into town.

Powertrain and Chassis

Now we’re at the part that matters. The BAW 212 burns petrol. A 2.0T turbo four, 185 kW and 410 N·m, hooked to an 8-speed auto. No hybrid trickery, no battery to baby — just a normal engine tuned for the modern era. The specs say 170 km/h top end and around 10.9 L/100 km, which is about what you’d expect from a brick on wheels.

The chassis is the real story. It’s built on a ladder frame, and you get a part-time 4×4 with a low-range box for when the going gets stupid. Both axles are solid five-link units — actual rigid axles, not the fancy independent stuff — and the center diff locks, with front and rear lockers on the better trims. You’ve got 235 mm of clearance, roughly a 40-degree approach, 36 on the way out, and it’ll splash through about 660 mm of water. The 80-litre tank matters more than people think when the next fuel stop is a day’s drive. Some markets get a diesel instead; worth asking what your region can take.
