I first saw a row of Ponys parked outside a shopping mall in Chengdu, every one a different colour, with a small crowd photographing them. That tells you something. The car is unapologetically cute — rounded, faintly boxy, capsule-shaped accents, and big square headlights with round pupils inside that appear to be staring right back at you. Presence wildly out of proportion to the footprint. And the footprint is small: 3,000 mm long, 1,510 mm wide. It slots into gaps an ordinary hatchback wouldn’t attempt, then reverses out again without any drama. Six exterior colours and five interior combinations mean buyers get to personalise something, which almost never happens at this money. The sneaky spec is the 1,630 mm roof height — it keeps the cabin from feeling like a helmet. For a distributor, that face is a commercial asset in its own right. It photographs brilliantly, and it drags people through a showroom door that a sensible grey city car never would.

Interior

Inside, the Pony spends its few millimetres well. Drop the rear bench and the boot goes from a slot to something over 300 litres — enough for a real supermarket run, or a courier’s afternoon. The driver’s seat is wider than rivals bother to make theirs, which sounds trivial written down, and then you sit in it every single day. Base cars are honest about what they are: digital display, manual air conditioning, Bluetooth, rear parking sensors. Move up the range and you get a 10.1-inch screen with OTA updates plus a phone key. Is any of this luxury? No, and pretending otherwise wastes everybody’s time. But the materials feel chosen rather than whatever happened to be cheapest that month, and the upright seating means two adults up front with two kids behind doesn’t turn into a border dispute. That counts for more than a spec sheet can show.

Powertrain and Chassis

The Pony is a pure battery electric car. No engine, so nothing to service in that department at all. Current export versions run a rear-mounted motor rated up to 30 kW — about 41 hp — with 90 Nm, and putting the motor at the back frees the front wheels to turn far enough for a 4.3 m turning circle, which in a multi-storey car park is close to a superpower. Energy comes from an 18.11 kWh LFP pack, good for up to 222 km on CLTC, and consumption of just 8.8 kWh/100 km keeps running costs at a level that’s almost hard to believe until you see a customer’s electricity bill. Now, one warning for anyone comparing older brochures: the 2024 cars used a 20 kW motor with 9.4–13.9 kWh batteries and 122–170 km of range. Effectively a different car. The 30 kW / 18.11 kWh spec is what new overseas buyers will meet. Top speed is 100 km/h. Don’t sell it as a highway machine — it was never designed to be one, and honest positioning saves you arguments later.
