BYD dropped the Seal 08 in China on 2 July 2026, and it sits right at the top of the Ocean range — a big fastback sedan that comes as either a pure electric car or a DM-i plug-in hybrid. This piece is about the electric version, though we’ll keep flagging where the two diverge because a buyer will absolutely ask. Both share the same 5,150 mm shell and the same 3,030 mm wheelbase, so what changes is everything under the skin.
Exterior
The BYD Seal 08 reads long before it reads anything else. Five metres fifteen nose to tail, just under two metres wide, and that fastback roofline runs straight into a full-width light bar at the back — the bit most people photograph first, if I’m honest. Up front there’s a closed fascia because there’s no engine to feed, slim headlights with the vertical daytime-running signature BYD is leaning on now, and a low hood that does more for drag than for looks. Semi-hidden door handles and a sculpted underbody keep the air moving, with 19-inch wheels as standard and bigger multi-spoke options if a customer wants the showier face. Roof-mounted LiDAR sits up top, which tells you the driver-assist kit is baked in rather than bolted on later.
Dimensions, since everyone asks those first: 5,150 mm long, 1,999 wide, 1,505 tall, on a 3,030 mm wheelbase. That wheelbase is the number to remember — it’s what buys the rear cabin its stretch.
Interior
Calmer in here than the fastback shell suggests from outside. Step in and the first thing that hits is space — that 3,030 mm wheelbase leaves the rear with proper legroom, and the second row gets electric leg rests, a control screen of its own, a folding table and a built-in fridge on the upper trims, which is the sort of thing that sells itself on a showroom floor. Up front, two zero-gravity seats as standard, all five positions heated, ventilated and massaged, soft-close doors, and double-layer acoustic glass so the cabin stays quiet at speed.
The screen is a 15.6-inch floating unit on the centre stack with a 10.25-inch digital cluster behind the wheel, DiLink 200 running on a Snapdragon 8295 so nothing lags, wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and — the bit I’d actually point out to a customer — the physical controls for climate and drive mode survive. Try working a touchscreen with gloves on and you’ll see why that counts. Boot is 508 litres, which is fine for the class even if the length hints at more.
Powertrain and Chassis
Battery and nothing else on the electric car — the BYD Seal 08 EV has no engine, no generator, nothing to fill up. Three trims, all on the 800V e-Platform 3.0 Evo with the second-generation Blade Battery, which is LFP, so no cobalt anxiety and a long cycle life. The full specs vary by trim, but the headline numbers are the ones that matter.
The entry car is rear-drive: a 255 kW motor on the back axle, 500 Nm, a 76.7 kWh pack good for 775 km on CLTC, and 5.2 seconds to 100 km/h, which is quick and honestly more than enough for a car this size.
Step up to the long-range rear-drive and the pack grows to 92.1 kWh, the motor to 320 kW, range to 905 km CLTC, and the sprint tightens to 4.9 seconds — that’s the one to point at anyone cross-shopping a large executive sedan.
Top of the line is the all-wheel-drive car: a 190 kW motor up front joins the 320 kW rear for 510 kW combined and 810 Nm, a 92.1 kWh pack, 785 km CLTC, 3.3 seconds to 100, and a 270 km/h top end. Call that leisurely and you’d be wrong — it’s properly quick.
Charging is the headline. On DC flash charging BYD says 10 to 97 percent in about 9 minutes, or roughly 400 km back in 5 — that’s megawatt-class and it’s the feature that actually changes how you plan a trip. AC is the tame side at around 7 kW, so for everyday running the DC network is where this car lives.
Underneath there are double wishbones up front and a five-link independent rear, rear-wheel steering across the range, and air suspension with adaptive damping on the upper trims — that’s what keeps this long car feeling shorter than it is in a car park. Driver assist is BYD’s God’s Eye B tier: one roof LiDAR, highway and city navigation assist, and an automated valet park-and-charge function on compatible chargers.
FAQ
Is the BYD Seal 08 EV a pure electric car or a hybrid? Pure electric — a BEV, so one battery, motors on the axles, nothing burning fuel anywhere. The Seal 08 also ships as a DM-i plug-in hybrid with a 1.5-litre engine and a 45.36 kWh blade pack, but that’s a different car underneath the same skin. If your customer wants to fill up, point them at the DM-i; if they want battery and nothing else, this is the one.
How far does the BYD Seal 08 EV go, and how long does charging take?
