The BYD Song Ultra DM-i is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) member of BYD’s Dynasty-network Song Ultra family — a midsize five-seat SUV built on fifth-generation DM super-hybrid tech. It is not the pure-electric version. The EV variant runs an 800V architecture with 605 or 710 km of range; this one pairs a 1.5L engine with a motor and a Blade battery, so it fills up and charges. Five trims sit in the line-up, from ¥129,900 to ¥159,900 at launch. That price bracket is the whole story, really: a long-body SUV with genuine 300 km-plus electric legs, at a number that undercuts most local equivalents once it lands.
Exterior
It’s a big car for the money. The BYD Song Ultra DM-i measures 4,850 mm bumper to bumper, so it sits right in the midsize SUV lane without tipping into full-size. Length sits at 4,850 mm. Width is 1,910 mm, height 1,670 mm — so it reads as a proper midsize SUV, not a raised hatchback. The wheelbase is 2,840 mm, and that’s the number that matters for cabin space, not the overall length.
The face keeps BYD’s Dragon Face language. Closed-off upper grille, black trim panels, the “Song” script centered — you’ll recognise it from across a car park, which is the point, at this price. Semi-hidden door handles are fitted. 19-inch wheels wear 235/50 R19 rubber as standard. Small thing, but buyers notice the wheels first.
At the back there’s a full-width light bar. The internal pattern uses BYD’s “Chinese knot” motif — the one people photograph at night. Six colours are offered: Fire Rock Gray, Snow Mountain White, Mist Purple, Star River Beige, Palm Green, and Obsidian Black. Pick the gray or the white if you want it to look expensive in a showroom; the purple photographs better online, in my experience.
Turning circle is 5.5 m. Tight for the class, honestly fine for what this is. The body is a subtle fastback, so the roofline tails off without killing rear headroom.
Interior
Calmer in here than the shell outside would have you expect. The BYD Song Ultra DM-i keeps the cabin quiet and uncluttered, which is what importers flag first on a showroom walk-through. A 15.6-inch floating touchscreen handles the main functions, with a 10.25-inch digital cluster tucked behind the wheel, and — the bit I’d actually point out to a customer — a flat-bottom two-spoke wheel and an electronic shifter keep the console clean. The DiLink 150 system runs UI 7.0, does 5G, and the four-zone voice recognition means whoever’s in the back can shout at it too.
Seats are where this car surprises people. Front ones heat, ventilate, and offer a 10-point massage. The passenger side gets a “queen” recliner mode — the short version, it folds flat for napping. A climate-controlled box sits between the seats, cooling from -6°C to 15°C or warming to 50°C. Good for medicine or a sandwich on a long haul, you’ll use it more than you’d think.
Sound is a 16-speaker set-up. 127-colour ambient lighting, an in-car fragrance system, 50W wireless charging, a heated wheel, and a panoramic roof round it out. Top trims add a 26-inch head-up display. Seven airbags are standard across the range. That’s the safety line a fleet buyer will check first, and it’s there.
Boot space is 730 litres, or 1,659 litres with the rear seats down. Front seats fold flat into roughly a 1.8 m bed — useful for camping, or just hauling something long. Rear legroom measures 986 mm. That’s the figure that sells it to families.
Powertrain and Chassis
This is a plug-in hybrid, so there’s an engine and a motor and a battery, all doing different jobs. The BYD Song Ultra DM-i leans on its 1.5L dedicated hybrid unit and a permanent-magnet motor, and the split is what gives it both electric legs and long-range security. The 1.5L is a dedicated hybrid unit — 74 kW and 126 N·m, nothing dramatic on its own. The permanent-magnet motor does the heavy lifting: 175 kW and 270 N·m. Together, 0–100 km/h lands at 7.5 seconds on the lighter battery, 7.9 on the bigger one. Quick enough that nobody complains about a hybrid being slow, which is the thing, really.
Battery’s Blade, LFP chemistry. 26.6 kWh on the standard pack — or thereabouts — giving 205 km CLTC on electric. Or 38.0 kWh if you tick the long-range trim, and that one does 310 km CLTC. Combined range reaches 1,845 km on a full tank and charge. The 60-litre tank is the quiet hero here; with 3.3 L/100 km NEDC when the battery’s flat, range anxiety simply isn’t part of the conversation.
Charging won’t hold you up. Peak DC is 82 kW, and 30–80 percent takes about 17 minutes. You’ll want that on a road trip, not in town. A 7 kW AC feed does the overnight work at a depot or home.
Underneath, there’s MacPherson up front and a multi-link independent rear — not a torsion beam, which shows up in how settled the car stays. Yun-C intelligent damping is standard, adjusting the body through corners and over bad roads. Is the Song Ultra DM-i a full EV or a hybrid? It’s a plug-in hybrid — PHEV, not BEV. You can drive it on electric alone for up to 310 km CLTC, then the 1.5L engine takes over and it behaves like a very efficient hybrid. Don’t confuse it with the Song Ultra EV, which is pure electric on an 800V platform. If your market has weak charging, the DM-i is the safer stock to carry.
Which variant should a dealer prioritise? The 310 km trims (38 kWh battery) are the ones customers remember, because “300 km electric” is an easy pitch. The 205 km versions cost less and still do everything a family needs.
