The short version: the Deepal S09 is Changan’s Deepal take on a big six-seat SUV, sat on the EPA1 electric platform. You get it two ways. One’s a REEV — and that’s the thing, really, a range-extender just means a 1.5T petrol motor that tops the battery up instead of turning the wheels. The other’s a BEV, so battery and motor, nothing to pour in. Body measures 5,205 mm long. Wheelbase, mind you, is 3,105 mm — genuinely long for a three-row, longer than it photographs. Huawei’s Qiankun ADS shows up on the higher trims. We’re not cheering for one market here; it’s the car as it sits, so you, or a dealer, can read the numbers and judge for yourself.

Exterior

Quiet from the side. That full-width light bar — the one people photograph — runs clean across the nose, and the handles sit flush. So the 5,205 mm length doesn’t read as bulky. At 1,996 mm wide, mind you, it still slips through most older car-park lanes without scraping. Cd is 0.283. Low, that. You feel it on the motorway as less wind noise than the size hints at, or thereabouts. Wheels are 20-inch to start. Step up to Ultra or Ultra+ and you get 21-inch Michelins. Height is 1,800 mm, on a 3,105 mm wheelbase. Small thing, but buyers notice: the flat 4.3 m² floor and a 200 mm aisle. Try loading a third-row kid by a curb and you’ll see why it matters more than the brochure shots show.

Interior

Calmer in here than the shell outside would have you expect. The dual 15.6-inch screens sit either side of the driver. Up high, a 43-inch AR-HUD floats the speed and nav. HarmonySpace 5 does the processing, so nothing lags — that’s the point, at this price. Now, the bit I’d actually point out to a customer: a 21.4-inch 3K panel drops down for the second row, on a hinge you angle from 0 to 75 degrees. Six seats. 2+2+2. Every one’s power-adjustable, with heat, ventilation and massage — and, yes, even the third row reclines, which surprises people. There’s a 10 L compressor fridge in the moving center island. Holds temperature after you walk away. Boot is 427 L behind the third row; fold them and it’s 1,392 L. In my experience, work the screens with gloves in a Nordic winter and you’ll get why physical climate knobs still earn their place.

Powertrain and Chassis

Two ways to move it. The REEV, first: a 1.5T range-extender, rated 110 kW — that’s 150 PS, the only number some buyers ask. It feeds a rear motor. That one’s 231 kW and 375 Nm, or 314 PS if you prefer, and it does 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, flat out at 205 km/h. Want more? The AWD version bolts a front motor on. Total’s 362 kW and 637 Nm, 5.9 seconds to 100. Properly quick for something this tall, you’ll admit.

Battery’s LFP. The standard pack is 40.18 kWh. Go long-range and it’s 53.49 kWh. The smaller one does 220 km CLTC on electric alone, 1,120 km combined. The bigger? 310 km electric, 1,210 km combined. A 30–80% top-up, by the way, takes about 15 minutes at a DC stall — you will, eventually, stop worrying about it. BEV trims carry the same motor families with no engine at all, and that 50 L fuel tank’s just gone.

Underneath: double wishbones up front, a multi-link independent rear. Upper trims add single-chamber air springs and CDC damping. Unusual at this size, that. You feel it in how flat it stays through a corner for something standing this high.

What driver-assist does the Deepal S09 use? Huawei Qiankun ADS, on the 3.3 stack with a 192-line LiDAR and an upgrade path to ADS 4 over the air in the higher trims. It handles highway NOA, city map-less navigation assist and valet parking, with AEB working from 4 to 150 km/h. Lower Max grades get the basic ADAS suite without the full sensor set.

How big is the cabin really, with all six seats up? Longer than the photos suggest. The 3,105 mm wheelbase gives a flat floor and a 1.3 m aisle height; an adult near 1.8 m fits the third row without knees on the seatback. You keep 427 L of boot with every row in use, enough for a couple of cabin bags, and the floor stays flat when you fold rows two and three.

Is the S09 a REEV or a BEV, and which should I look at? Both exist. Pick REEV if your market has patchy charging and you want 1,100+ km without a charger stop; pick BEV if fast charging is everywhere and you’d rather have no engine, no generator, nothing to service on the powertrain side. The chassis and cabin are identical either way.
