Fengshen sends the Dongfeng Aeolus Mage out as the Mage once it leaves China, though back home the same car wears the Haohan badge — same shell, same hybrid hardware, just different lettering. Built in Wuhan on the DSMA 2.0 platform, it’s a 4.6-metre five-seat crossover that’s been reaching export markets since around 2024, from the Philippines across to the Gulf. What you’re really buying is a tidy family SUV that doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t.
Exterior
Short and a bit tall, with a wide stance that reads bigger than the tape measure says. There’s a slim grille up front and a full-width light bar, the sides stay clean, and the roofline holds nearly flat so nobody in the back loses headroom. Wheels are 18 or 19 inch depending on trim, on 225/60 or 235/50 rubber — nothing exotic, easy to source when one gets kerbed.
People always open with size, and I don’t blame them. This one lands at 4,667 mm long on a 2,775 mm wheelbase, which splits the gap between a city runabout and something you’d point at a longer trip without a second thought. About 1,905 wide, 1,630 tall. Ground clearance sits near 170 mm, approach and departure 20 and 26 degrees — fine for car parks and the odd rough lane, not a serious off-roader by any stretch. Six airbags, LED front and rear, and a panoramic roof are all in the package, the sort of kit a dealer ticks off without you having to ask.
Interior
Inside, the headline is a 13.2-inch floating touchscreen with a digital cluster tucked behind the wheel and a wireless pad on the console — and the bit I’d actually point out is that climate and drive-mode still live on physical switches, not buried three menus deep in a screen. Try working a touchscreen with gloves on and you’ll see why that counts.
Space is the quiet strength here. Five seats, a flat floor under the front tunnel, and a boot that opens to about 555 litres with the bench up — fold it and you’re well past 1,500 litres for the bulky stuff, which is honestly more than most families will use in a fortnight. The rear bench splits, and the cabin feels airy for the class thanks to that long wheelbase. Materials are what you’d expect at this money: soft-touch up top, decent plastic lower down, enough cubby space to lose your phone in.
Powertrain and Chassis
Two ways through this car. The plain one is a 1.5T turbo petrol — Dongfeng’s Mach engine, 150 kW and 305 Nm — with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch, front-wheel drive, 0–100 in roughly 8.5 seconds and a top speed near 190 km/h. A buyer who just wants a normal compact SUV with no battery anxiety takes this one, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
The interesting one is the HEV. Dongfeng’s DH-i mates that 1.5T turbo to a dual-motor set-up through a four-speed hybrid gearbox, and it’s genuinely clever — series and parallel modes, plus a power-split the maker calls a world first in this layout, which sounds like a marketing line right up until you feel it shuffle through town. Combined output is 215 kW and 565 Nm, so the hybrid actually pulls harder than the petrol while sipping around 4.2 L/100 km on the older NEDC cycle, closer to 5 on WLTC; call that well over 1,300 km of total range on a full tank, and 0–100 in about 6.9 seconds, which is brisk and honestly fine for what this is. Worth knowing there’s a closely related PHEV twin sold as the Aeolus L7 with a bigger battery and a plug — steer a customer there if they specifically want to charge.
Underneath, every Mage runs MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear, which is why it rides more settled than the price suggests — unusual damping maturity at this end of the market, the kind you notice on a broken back road. Discs all round, a small ternary-lithium battery in the hybrid, and driver aids up to adaptive cruise, lane-keeping and automatic braking as part of the Level 2 kit.
FAQ
Is the Dongfeng Aeolus Mage a hybrid, or do I get a normal petrol engine? Both are on the table. The simple version is a 1.5T turbo petrol with a 7-speed dual-clutch, and plenty of people buy exactly that. The one most export markets see is the HEV — that 1.5T paired with Dongfeng’s DH-i system — which is the more powerful and the more economical of the two, so it’s the one I’d steer a first-time buyer toward. Want to plug in and charge? That’s the L7 PHEV twin, not the Mage itself, and it’s worth saying that out loud before anyone quotes a range number.
Why is it called Haohan in China but Mage abroad? Same vehicle, different badge — that’s the whole story. In China it’s the Aeolus Haohan; overseas Dongfeng sells it as the Mage. A few regions see it under yet another name, like Hedmos 06. Build, dimensions and the hybrid hardware carry over untouched — only the lettering and the local spec sheet change, so don’t let the name game put you off.
How much boot space does it have, and will it seat a family? Five seats, and a boot of around 555 litres with the rear bench up — drop the split and it opens to well over 1,500 litres, enough for a pram and a fortnight of luggage. With a 2,775 mm wheelbase the second row has proper legroom and headroom, so it works as a real family crossover rather than a token five-seater that nobody fits behind the driver.
Can the Dongfeng Aeolus Mage be imported to my country? Where a market has no import certification requirement, it goes straight in. Some regions do ask for type approval, and the EU is the one we hear about most, so there we confirm first whether this model can be supplied with the certification your country requires. Send us your destination and we’ll check it properly before anything moves.
How do we supply the Mage, and how do we start? We’re a China-based auto export company, so we source the Mage from the manufacturer and handle the export side — paperwork, booking, sea freight, delivery to your port. Most of the people we work with are overseas dealers and importers building a steady line out of China, though we also help independent buyers running their own import. Tell us your market, drive side and rough volume and we’ll come back with availability, shipping options and the document list your destination needs.
