The MG7 is a four-door fastback from SAIC MG. Mind you, MG is owned by a Chinese company now, and the car is built in China for export. The short version is this: it looks like a coupe, seats four, and runs on petrol. That’s the thing, really — nobody is pretending it’s an EV.

Exterior

The roofline drops low toward the tail. It is a fastback, not a notchback, and that shape is the whole pitch. There is an active rear wing. In my experience, buyers in showrooms always point at it first — small thing, but buyers notice.

The wheels are sized for presence. Nineteen inches on most grades, or thereabouts, with bigger rims if the buyer opts up. The front end is wide and low. The grille sits flat, and the headlights run thin, which is the point, at this price — it reads expensive without being expensive.

Interior

The cabin leans sport but stays usable. You get a flat-bottom wheel and bolstered seats up front. The screens are wide and joined. That is the thing, really — one long panel instead of two loose ones, which looks cleaner to most customers.

Rear space is fine for adults. The fastback roof costs a little headroom, you will, eventually notice it, but nobody complained in our viewing sessions. Materials are honest plastic in places. Small thing, but buyers notice the soft pad on the doors, and MG put one there.

Powertrain and Chassis

The headline engine is a 2.0T. It pairs with a 9-speed automatic, the 9AT, and that combo is the one to demo. There is also a 1.5T option. It is the cheaper entry, or thereabouts, for markets that want a lower ticket.

The chassis is tuned for the road. In my experience the steering feels quicker than rival sedans at this weight. The rear wing is not just for show. It lifts at speed, which is the point, at this price — downforce you can mention without blushing. Braking is by disc all round. You will, eventually, appreciate the bite if you drive it hard on a test loop.

FAQ

Is the MG7 a petrol or electric car? It is petrol. The MG7 runs a 2.0T or a 1.5T engine. There is no battery-only version — and that is deliberate.

What gearbox does the 2.0T use? A 9-speed automatic, the 9AT. The short version: smooth shifts, and it holds a gear when you ask for pace.

Does the fastback shape hurt rear room? A little, yes. The roofline drops, so tall passengers lose a hair of headroom. In my experience most buyers accept it for the looks.
