Ora has been building cute, retro-styled electric cars for years. The Ora 5 is the first one with a proper roof rack mentality. It’s an SUV. Specifically, Ora’s first SUV, launched in December 2025, and that shift matters more than any single measurement. The brand’s previous cars were deliberately small and deliberately styled to charm. This one is 4,471 mm long, 1,833 mm wide and 1,641 mm tall, on a 2,720 mm wheelbase. Compact SUV dimensions, squarely in the busiest segment in most export markets. That’s not a coincidence. Ora is going where the volume is, and the Ora 5 is the car it’s going there with.

Peel away the badge and it’s a rounded, friendly silhouette — short overhangs, a high waistline, wheels pushed towards the corners. The proportions read taller than the length suggests, which is exactly what buyers in this class want to see. Ground clearance and the raised seating position are the two things that convert a hatchback shopper into an SUV shopper, and the Ora 5 delivers both.

There’s a roof-mounted sensor housing. That’s the lidar, and it’s visible. Some styling teams hide it, some celebrate it. Ora has gone the visible route, which is honest, though I’d argue it makes the car look more technically ambitious than most of your customers will ever get to use. Which brings me to the thing I’d flag hardest.

The Ora 5 carries lidar and a NOA — navigate on autopilot — system. In China, that’s a working feature set on mapped highways. Outside China, it is a regulatory question first and a technical question second, and in many markets the answer will be no, or not yet. Do not build your launch campaign on it. Build it on the size, the price position and the electric running costs, and treat smart driving as a future upgrade path. I’ve seen importers learn this lesson expensively.

Interior

Step in and the Ora 5 feels more grown-up than the brand’s earlier cars, which is the intended direction. On a 2,720 mm wheelbase, the cabin is genuinely usable. Front space is generous, the driving position is high and commanding as SUV buyers expect, and rear legroom is adequate rather than class-leading. Two adults in the back are comfortable; three is a short-hop arrangement. That’s a fair summary of the segment, and I won’t dress it up.

The dash is clean and screen-led. A central touchscreen carries most of the interaction, a digital instrument display sits ahead of the driver, and physical switchgear is thin on the ground. Materials step up noticeably from Ora’s earlier cars — softer surfaces on the touchpoints, decent seat trim, and a general sense that the interior budget went where hands and eyes actually go. Storage is sensible. Door bins that hold a bottle, a usable console, cup holders that aren’t an afterthought. Small things, and the things owners mention when they recommend a car to a friend.

Where I’d push back: the screen can be slow to react when the cabin is cold, and the menu takes a week to learn. Also check how much of the software is localised for your market’s language, and whether right-hand drive is available if you need it. Ask early. Those two items stall more export deals at the port than anything mechanical, and neither is fixed by a firmware update you can do yourself.

Powertrain and Chassis

One motor, up front, rated at 150 kW — 204 PS — with 260 Nm. Front-wheel drive. That’s a well-judged number for a compact SUV. Enough to feel quick off the line and easily enough for overtaking with a full load, without the insurance and tyre-cost penalties that come with a high-output dual-motor setup. For a family car in a market where running costs decide the purchase, it’s the right specification.

Battery options give you a choice that maps neatly onto two buyer types. The shorter-range Ora 5 delivers 480 km on CLTC for buyers whose week is mostly urban and who charge at home. The longer version reaches 580 km and suits the customer who does regular inter-city trips or can’t charge at home every night. Same car, two propositions. As always with CLTC, discount it. Real mixed driving lands lower than the label, and a cold motorway run lower still. Quote your customers a realistic distance and you’ll build a reputation for honest numbers. That’s worth more than winning a specification argument.

Chassis is conventional and sensible: MacPherson struts at the front, a simpler rear setup, front-wheel drive. It rides better than the price suggests and it’s inexpensive to maintain. For importers in markets where workshop labour is cheap but parts lead times are long, simplicity is a feature, not a shortfall.

One practical point on the lidar. A roof-mounted sensor is an exposed component. In markets with harsh sun, dust or gravel roads, ask us about protection and about what happens to the warranty if it’s damaged. Your fleet customers will ask within the first month.
