SAIC put the Roewe M7 DMH on sale in China back in September 2025, and honestly the pitch writes itself — a sedan pushing five metres that does the school run and the shopping on electricity alone, then crosses a country without anybody hunting for a charger. What photos don’t tell you is who drew it. Josef Kaban, once design chief at Rolls-Royce, and this is the first production car he has signed off at SAIC, lifted more or less whole from the Pearl concept that turned up in Shanghai.

Exterior

Start with the grille, because everyone does. Most Chinese hybrids hide behind a sealed-off nose these days, and Roewe went the opposite way with a tall vertical arrangement, waterfall bars, a fair amount of chrome, and a ROEWE script sitting in the middle of it that lights up once the sun goes down. Split headlights flank the thing, thin daytime strips riding high with the working lamps set lower, a trick that reads expensive or fussy depending on which paint you order.

As for the dimensions, 4,940 mm nose to tail, 1,890 across, 1,510 tall, the lot of it on a 2,820 mm wheelbase — and yet it turns inside 5.8 m, so multi-storey car parks aren’t the ordeal you’d expect of something this long. The roof slopes away fastback fashion into a tail wearing one of those 3D floating light bars that stretches right across. Entry cars roll on 215/55 R17 rubber, and moving up the range gets you 225/50 R18. Five paints on the list, Tahiti grey through light tea gold, purple, mousse white and a deep blue, plus a blacked-out package for anyone who finds all that brightwork a bit much.

Interior

Inside it’s a symmetrical dash, a two-spoke wheel and a shifter on the column, so nothing exotic. The 15.6-inch 2.5K display handles almost everything with a 10.25-inch cluster sitting ahead of you, both fed by a Snapdragon 8155 running SAIC OS, and the voice assistant is built on ByteDance’s Doubao model, which means you speak to it in ordinary sentences instead of reciting whatever phrase a manual told you to memorise. Works better than it sounds written down.

Space, though, is the real argument here. There’s 126 mm of knee room in the second row over a completely flat floor, and Roewe likes quoting 85.5% interior space efficiency, which is marketing arithmetic, though you do feel it back there. Fold the front passenger seat forward and flat and the rear becomes what they’ve christened a panoramic sofa recliner: leg rest running most of the cabin, seating position lifted by 38 degrees. Heating covers both rows as standard, while ventilation and massage arrive higher up alongside a heated wheel, 50 W wireless charging, ambient lighting in 256 colours and a panoramic roof with its own powered blind. Boot swallows 527 L, and somebody counted roughly thirty storage nooks dotted about.

Powertrain and Chassis

DMH 6.0 is SAIC’s own plug-in hybrid architecture, front-drive only in the Roewe M7 DMH, and it pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine built specifically for hybrid work — 82 kW, 135 Nm, thermal efficiency north of 43% — with a 137 kW, 330 Nm drive motor and a single-speed DHT. On paper that reads 7.9 seconds to 100 km/h with 185 km/h available somewhere legal, though nobody buys one of these for the numbers; low-speed smoothness is what it’s actually tuned around.

Battery in the 2025 cars is a 19.7 kWh LFP pack rated at 160 km of CLTC electric range, or 115 km once you switch over to WLTC, and that second figure is the one I’d put in front of a European customer. Fill the 55 L tank as well and the combined CLTC claim reaches 2,050 km. Drive it with the pack empty and consumption sits at 2.91 L/100 km CLTC, 3.95 on WLTC, so even neglected the thing doesn’t punish you. The 2026 revision drops in a larger battery and takes electric range up to 205 km. Charging isn’t quick by EV standards, 3.3 kW on AC with DC peaking near 40 kW, but 30 to 80 percent inside 20 minutes is plenty for a car most people plug in at home overnight.

Underneath sit MacPherson struts up front with a multi-link rear, and the upper trims bring mCDC adaptive dampers with what Roewe calls AI preview: the system reads the surface 200 times every second, looks 15 m down the road, and takes the edge off a bump before the wheel gets to it rather than afterwards. L2 assistance features on the list too, highway NOA among it, plus 360-degree cameras and self-parking.

FAQ

Is the Roewe M7 DMH a plug-in hybrid or a range extender? It’s a PHEV, and the distinction is worth getting right. The petrol engine can certainly act as a generator for the battery, but it’s also geared to drive the front wheels directly whenever that turns out to be the efficient option, which in practice means motorway cruising. A REEV behaves differently, since there the engine never touches the wheels at all and only ever makes electricity. Anyone who has driven both tends to notice it on a long trip.

How far does it go on electricity, and how quickly does it charge? Depends which one you order. The 2025 pack is good for 160 km CLTC, or 115 km if WLTC is the standard your market quotes, while the 2026 car with the larger battery claims 205 km CLTC. Combined, full tank and full charge, the claim comes to 2,050 km. On a DC charger you’ll see 30 to 80 percent in something like 20 minutes, and AC charging tops out at 3.3 kW, which is no great loss when most owners simply leave it plugged in overnight.

Is this the same car as the Roewe D7, and will it wear an MG badge abroad? Related, not identical. They share DMH hardware, but the body is different, the design language is newer, and the M7 is the more spacious of the pair. Badging is a fair thing to ask given SAIC’s habit of selling Roewe-derived models as MG in export markets — nothing of that sort has been confirmed for this one, so for now Roewe M7 DMH is the name to search the specs under.

Can the Roewe M7 DMH be imported to my country? Plenty of markets carry no import certification requirement at all, and in those the car simply goes in as built. Others want type approval first, the EU being the case that comes up most often, and there we’d need to confirm whether this model can be supplied with the certificate your authorities accept.
