Exterior Design
The Tesla Model Y L features the same front and rear lighting layout and bumper design as the standard Model Y, but the rear section of the vehicle has been structurally modified. The Model Y L retains the combination of a full-width daytime running light and split headlights. The rear end is noticeably raised, creating a sleek and upright visual effect, and features a sportier rear spoiler. The taillights continue to use the classic diffuse-reflection full-width design. Despite the extended body dimensions, the drag coefficient is just 0.216 (lower than the Model Y’s 0.22)—an exceptionally low figure that ensures low energy consumption and extended range. The new model is available in six exterior paint colors: Starlight Gray, Pearl White, Glacier Blue, Star Diamond Black, Flame Red, and Starlight Gold, with Starlight Gold being exclusive to the Model Y L.
However, the differences between the two models are clearly visible from the side profile. The most obvious change is the elongated central cabin. While the Model Y’s body line slopes downward sharply after the B-pillar, the Model Y L’s roofline extends further before beginning to dip. This improves rear-seat window visibility, and the rear quarter windows are also noticeably larger. It is evident that the designers have maximized headroom and legroom for third-row passengers without compromising the vehicle’s overall visual appeal; without close inspection, it is difficult to discern any significant differences from the Model Y. The new model has a ground clearance of 169 millimeters when unloaded, an increase of 2 millimeters over the Model Y.
In terms of body dimensions, the Tesla Model Y L measures 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,040 mm; In comparison, the Model Y (4,797/1,920/1,624 mm in length, width, and height, with a wheelbase of 2,890 mm), the Model Y L is 179 mm longer, maintains the same width, is 44 mm taller, and features a 150 mm longer wheelbase, which will generally enhance interior passenger space. The new model also features a brand-new 19-inch wheel design. Additionally, it adopts a mixed-width tire setup with 255-series tires in the front and 275-series tires in the rear (compared to the Model Y’s 255-series tires front and rear), increasing the rear tire contact patch to provide the vehicle with higher lateral limits and high-speed stability, reflecting Tesla’s commitment to driving safety and driving enjoyment for its owners.
Interior Design
The Tesla Model Y L largely retains the design language of the Model Y, maintaining a minimalist aesthetic with ambient lighting that wraps around the cabin. The overall materials exude a sense of luxury, and the interior is available in two color schemes: dark and light gray. The Model Y L features an upgraded center display, increasing from the original 15.4 inches to 16 inches, with a resolution boost of approximately 30%, resulting in sharper in-car video playback. The infotainment system continues to utilize an AMD Ryzen processor. Additionally, the front wireless charging pad has been upgraded to support simultaneous 50W + 30W fast wireless charging and is equipped with an air-cooling system.
The new model also increases the number of interior speakers, upgrading from 16 in the Long Range AWD version to 19, including one subwoofer. New additions include a center speaker in the armrest and two overhead speakers, ensuring clear sound localization for every seat. According to the manufacturer, the Model Y L features significantly reduced wind, road, and tire noise, making it the best-insulated locally produced model currently available. This is the result of the combined effects of acoustic glass, an upgraded suspension system, and quiet tires.
Powertrain
The Tesla Model Y L is equipped with a larger battery pack, with capacity increased from 78.4 kWh to 82 kWh, delivering a range of 751 kilometers—essentially on par with the Long Range AWD version (750 kilometers). The new model retains the front AC induction asynchronous motor and rear permanent magnet synchronous motor layout, with slightly increased power output compared to the Model Y: the front motor delivers 142 kW and the rear motor 198 kW, for a total output of 340 kW (the Model Y’s maximum output is 331 kW). The vehicle’s curb weight has not increased significantly, remaining at 2,088 kg. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, just 0.2 seconds slower than the Model Y Long Range AWD. Energy efficiency remains a Tesla strength; the Model Y L achieves 12.8 kWh/100 km, only slightly higher than the Model Y. The top speed remains at 201 km/h, and the vehicle’s charging power remains unchanged at 250 kW.
