If you sell Volkswagen in an emerging market, you probably already know the Volkswagen Tharu name. SAIC Volkswagen has been pushing it out under that badge since 2018, and in places like the Philippines and Mexico it is already on the road in decent numbers. Petrol only. No hybrid, no electric, nothing with a plug anywhere in the range. That sounds like a weakness in 2026. In a lot of your markets, honestly, it is the reason the car still sells.

Exterior

The first thing I’d tell you about this car has nothing to do with how it looks. There are two of them. The Volkswagen Tharu you want is 4,458 mm long, 1,841 mm wide and 1,632 mm tall, on a 2,680 mm wheelbase. Fine. Normal compact SUV numbers, nothing to argue about. Now the trap: there is a shorter, cheaper car sold alongside it, usually called the Tharu XR, at 4,355 mm long on a 2,651 mm wheelbase. Same badge on the tailgate. Almost the same name in your catalogue.

100 mm of length is the difference between a car your customer test-drove and a car your customer received. Get the trim code in writing before you raise the purchase order. I have watched a dealer argue this one out on a showroom floor with a customer holding a brochure, and the dealer was right. Beyond that, the styling is what I’d call safe Volkswagen. Horizontal grille slats. Squared-off headlights that blend straight into the grille. A strong shoulder crease down the side and a fairly upright greenhouse. Roof rails on most trims. The rear is a simple light cluster with a chrome strip across the tailgate on higher grades. Not exciting. There, I said it.

What it does is work on a known quantity, and if you are selling in a market where buyers flinch at unfamiliar Chinese badges, that VW face on the grille closes deals before your salesperson opens their mouth. Panel gaps are even. Paint is good. The shut lines look like they came off a line that has been building cars for thirty years, which they did. That is the whole value proposition of this car, and I would build your marketing around it rather than around the design.

Interior

Step in and it feels German. Genuinely. The catch is that it feels German at this price, which is a different thing. The touchscreen runs 8 to 9.2 inches depending on grade, with analogue or semi-digital instruments behind the wheel. Volkswagen’s older MIB interface does the work here. Simple menus. Fewer annoyances than the newest touch-everything systems, in my view, and your older customers will agree with me. Physical climate controls on most trims. Good. That matters more than any screen size when someone is driving in traffic with the family aboard.

Space, though, is fine rather than generous. Two adults up front. Two more plus a child in the back. The rear bench is flat-ish and the transmission tunnel hump on the 4Motion version eats into the middle seat, so if you plan to market the Volkswagen Tharu as a genuine five-seater, that hump belongs in your sales training, not in a footnote. Three adults across the back is a stretch and your customer will find out within a week. Cargo is around 455 litres with the bench up, roughly 1,500 litres folded. The loading lip is low, which is a small thing that customers actually notice.

Trim varies enormously by grade and by the market the car was originally built for. Base cars get cloth and hard plastics on the upper door cards. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated unit makes 81 kW, or 110 PS. It is the volume seller in China and the engine most export enquiries land on. The 1.5-litre turbo makes 118 kW, or 160 PS. At the top, a 2.0-litre turbo at 137 kW, or 186 PS, with a 0-100 km/h time of about 8.6 seconds.

I’ll be blunt about the 2.0T. It is the only one that feels quick, it is the one that makes the Volkswagen Tharu genuinely pleasant to drive, and it is the one that will hurt your customer at the fuel pump and hurt you at the customs valuation desk. If your market taxes on displacement, that 2.0-litre costs your buyer real money every year they own it, not once at purchase. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine is the sensible commercial choice. It is also not fast. Do not let a buyer test-drive the 2.0T and then order the 1.5. That mistake comes back as a complaint, every time.

Transmission is a five-speed manual on the entry car, dual-clutch automatic on the turbos. Take the manual seriously for rough roads and long service intervals, and in plenty of export markets it is what fleets ask for anyway. The DSG shifts better and adds a maintenance consideration at higher mileage. Know which one your workshop can actually service.

Underneath, MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link rear on most versions, with a simpler torsion beam on the cheaper derivatives. Ride quality on 17- or 18-inch wheels is comfortable and well damped. Arguably better over broken surfaces than a lot of newer, stiffer crossovers, and in the roads your customers actually drive on, that is worth more than a tenth of a second. Front-wheel drive is standard. 4Motion all-wheel drive comes only on the 2.0T.

The Volkswagen Tharu is a China-market car first. Its connectivity and navigation stack is built around Chinese services and Chinese map data. Import it into a market outside China and you should expect to strip or replace the infotainment software, then budget for that in your landed cost before you quote a single unit. Dealers who skip this step end up with cars that cannot do maps. That is an aftersales problem, not a cosmetic one. It is also entirely avoidable.
