Denza started life as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz, and the N9 is the brand’s flagship SUV — a full-size, six-seat thing that measures 5.26 metres nose to tail. It’s not a rebadged BYD; it sits above the parent brand the way a premium line should, and the bits that matter here are the ones buyers actually ask about: how big it is, how the cabin works, and what’s powering the wheels. Two answers to that last question exist, and they’re different enough that you’ll want to pick early.

What you get either way is Denza’s e³ tri-motor layout, air suspension, and the “God’s Eye” driver-assistance suite as standard. The shell stays the same across both powertrains, so the choice really comes down to whether you want a plug or not.

Exterior

Big, but it carries the length well. The Denza N9 reads as a proper full-size SUV rather than a stretched something-else — 5,258 mm long, 2,030 wide, 1,830 tall, on a 3,125 mm wheelbase, sitting right alongside the big German seven-seaters without quite matching their height. The front end’s clean and a little conservative, which is probably the point: this is pitched at people trading out of an X7 or a GLS, not anyone chasing sportiness.

Wheels are 22-inch as standard, 275/45 all round, and the whole thing turns inside 4.65 m — tighter than the length suggests, more on why below. Paint runs from quiet greys and blacks through to the two-tone combos the 2026 car added, a green-over-silver and a purple-over-gold you’ll either love or quietly walk past. The roofline stays flat to protect third-row headroom, and Denza frames it as a “technology-safe family SUV,” the kind of line that means little until you sit in it.

One detail worth flagging to a customer: the rear axle carries two separately steered motors, which lets the car do a crab-walk and a tight turning trick that makes a 5.3-metre SUV feel shorter in a car park than it has any right to.

Interior

Calmer in here than the size outside would have you expect. Up front there’s a 13.2-inch 2.5K cluster, a matching 13.2-inch passenger screen, and a 17.3-inch central display running DiLink 150 — three panels, all sharp, none of them lagging in the demos — plus a 50-inch AR-HUD floating the key info into your line of sight, and the bit I’d actually point out is the zero-gravity “queen seat” on the front passenger side, because that’s the feature a spouse or a boss notices first.

Six seats in a 2+2+2 layout, so nobody’s stuck on a middle perch in row two. First and second rows heat, ventilate and massage; the second row slides sideways, carries a pair of folding tables and two 50 W wireless chargers, and there’s a 17.3-inch roof screen and a fridge tucked in for the people behind. Third row gets power adjust and heat, which is rare at this price and the reason families cross-shop it against the Li Auto L9.

Audio is a 26-speaker Devialet system, and the materials — Nappa, two-tone trim, the new “Golden Mountain Brown” option — are a notch above what you’d call acceptable. Boot runs 351 litres with everything up and 1,140 with the rears folded, so it’ll swallow a family’s luggage and then some; the rears flatten into something close to a bed, which sells itself on a showroom floor.

Powertrain and Chassis

Two ways to power it, and this is where the N9 splits from a single-shape car like the iCAR.

The plug-in hybrid, badged DM, pairs a 2.0-litre turbo four — 152 kW on its own, 44% thermal efficiency, sips 92-octane — with three motors for a system total of 680 kW, or 925 PS, and 1,035 Nm; 0–100 comes in 3.9 seconds, which is absurd for something this heavy and honestly the figure that ends the conversation with most customers. A 46.9 kWh Blade LFP pack gives 202 km of CLTC electric range, the combined total stretches past 1,300 km on a 70-litre tank, and you can fast-charge 30 to 80% in about 19 minutes. There is no range-extender (REEV) version of the N9 — if a customer wants that layout, it isn’t here, and saying so early saves the wrong expectation later.

The pure-electric N9 skips the engine entirely — battery and nothing else. It runs a tri-motor set at 710 kW (952 PS) off a 103 kWh Blade pack, good for around 620 km CLTC, on an 800-volt architecture that puts meaningful range back in during a short charge stop.

Underneath both sits front double-wishbone and rear multi-link suspension with DiSus-A dual-chamber air springs and variable damping, and that’s the chassis doing the quiet work — flat through a bend, soft over a bad road, height adjustable by 150 mm. The e³ platform with CTB battery-to-body integration keeps it rigid, rear motors steer ±20 degrees for the crab walk and a 4.65 m turning circle, and God’s Eye B handles the driving assistance with one LiDAR, five millimetre-wave radars, twelve cameras and an Orin X chip at 254 TOPS — city NOA without maps, plus the usual automatic parking and lane keeping.

FAQ

Is the Denza N9 a plug-in hybrid or a pure electric car? Both exist. The DM is the plug-in hybrid — 2.0T engine plus three motors, 680 kW, ~1,300 km combined range with 202 km of electric-only CLTC. The other N9 is a BEV, tri-motor, 710 kW, around 620 km CLTC, no engine at all. There’s no range-extender (REEV) version, so don’t go looking for one. Which to stock depends on whether your market leans toward charging access or long-haul flexibility.

How far does it go, and how long does charging take? On the PHEV, 202 km electric on CLTC and over 1,300 km combined; 30 to 80% in roughly 19 minutes on DC. The BEV does about 620 km CLTC on its 103 kWh pack and charges fast on an 800-volt system. Real-world electric range will drop in winter or with the air-con working hard, as it does on every EV, so quote CLTC and add the caveat rather than promising the headline number.

What’s the six-seat layout like, and does the tech actually help? 2+2+2, so six individual seats, heated and massaged up front and in row two, a zero-gravity passenger seat, and a powered, heated third row — not the usual penalty bench.
