The Jetta VS5 turned up in 2019. It was Jetta’s first SUV — Jetta being the cheaper sub-brand FAW-Volkswagen cooked up for younger buyers in China. Don’t read too much into the new badge, though. Under the skin it’s plain VW. A 1.4T turbo petrol, the MQB platform, the same cabin recipe VW has been making for years. You’re basically paying less for VW smarts.

Exterior

The front end gives it away. That wide Y-mesh grille sits low and the LED headlights stretch back into the wings — younger, a bit sharper than a VW would go. Base wheels are 17-inch, top trims get 18s, roof rails if you want them. The rear is clean: LED clusters, a small spoiler. Paint is the usual story, white, black, silver, grey, plus one blue. Nothing loud. On paper it’s 4,419 mm long and 1,841 mm wide — looks small. But that 2,630 mm wheelbase opens the cabin up more than the dimensions hint.

Interior

Inside, it’s the VW playbook. Flat dash, sensible controls, an 8-inch screen for the dials and an 8- or 10-inch touchscreen on Jetta’s J-Link. CarPlay’s there, CarLife too. Materials are tough, not rich, and that’s fine for a workhorse. Five seats. Fold the back row and you’ve got a 482 L boot. The 51 L tank means you’re not filling up every week. Kit for the money is decent: parking sensors, reverse camera, cruise, front and side airbags as standard. Climb the range and you pick up a 360 camera, auto braking, leatherette seats.

Powertrain and Chassis

Short version. The Jetta VS5 runs a 1.4-litre EA211 turbo — the same family VW bolts into Golfs and Octavias — 110 kW and 250 Nm. Petrol, full stop. No hybrid, no electric, just a turbo on gas. Front wheels only. You choose a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed Aisin auto; take the auto, it’s the easy one around town. Underneath is MQB A1, shared with the VW Tharu, SEAT Ateca and Skoda Karoq, so it’s no gamble. MacPherson up front, multi-link behind, rides rough roads without wobbling and burns about 6.5 L/100 km in real use. 0–100 is around 9.5 seconds, calm, not slow.
