Quick bit of background first, because the badge throws people off. Livan is a Chongqing joint venture between Geely Holding and Lifan Technology, stitched together back in 2022. Underneath, though, the X3 Pro is a Geely Vision X3. Same body, same 1.5-litre engine, new logo on the grille. That reads like a dig at the car and it honestly isn’t meant as one. They have been building this thing since 2017. Whatever was going to go wrong went wrong a long time ago and got fixed, and the parts sit on shelves in workshops that couldn’t tell you what a Livan is.

Exterior

Four metres and five millimetres, bumper to bumper. Which is rather the point of it. Width goes 1,760, height 1,575, and there is 2,480 mm between the axles. You park it in gaps other people drive straight past. The nose does a waterfall grille thing, halogen headlamps with LED strips for daytime, fog lamps sunk low in the bumper. Alloys are sixteens on 205/60 rubber. Roof rails too, and not the fake kind — strap a load to those and they hold.

Ride height is 185 mm. Approach angle 22 degrees, departure 37, if that sort of number means anything to you. Nobody is taking one rock crawling, obviously. Broken tarmac though, unpaved farm tracks, a kerb that has vanished under floodwater after a storm — the Livan X3 Pro just gets on with it. Half the low-slung hatchbacks in your market wouldn’t.

Interior

Five seats, five doors. Boot is 400 litres with the bench up, and folding that bench turns the whole back half into a small van. Deep rather than wide, so suitcases go in happily and flatpack furniture argues with you.

Base cars get an 8-inch floating touchscreen. Move up the export trims and it becomes a 10.25-inch one, plus a 7-inch digital cluster where the dials used to sit. Bluetooth, phone mirroring, voice control, six speakers — none of that will embarrass your phone, but it does the job, and thank goodness the climate controls are still buttons you can find without looking.

Plastics are hard, honest and screwed together properly. No creaks, no rattles over rough surfaces. Livan says there are 26 cubbies and pockets in here; I lost count somewhere around the door bins. Things buyers actually ask about: the sunroof’s electric, entry is keyless with a starter button, there’s cruise control, mirrors that heat, a PM2.5 filter for the cabin, a reverse camera and sensors on the rear bumper.

Powertrain and Chassis

One engine, so no choices to agonise over. It is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four — JLC-4G15C if you like codes — good for 83 kW, meaning 113 hp, with 143 Nm turning up somewhere in the 4,400 to 4,800 rpm band. Certain export markets take a softer 103 hp version of the same block instead. Gearbox is a five-speed manual or a CVT, and either way everything goes to the front wheels.

Quick it isn’t. That 103 hp manual wants thirteen seconds to reach 100 km/h and runs out at 170; the CVT gives up at 160. Drive it the way people drove cars twenty years ago, revs up and decisive with the lever, and around town it feels perfectly lively. Fuel figures: WLTC says 6.8 L/100 km for the manual, 6.92 with the CVT, and it drinks plain 92-octane. Tank holds 45 litres. Do that maths and you are not stopping often.

Suspension is MacPherson struts at the front, torsion beam at the back. Steering is electrically assisted. All four corners get discs, ventilated ahead and solid behind, and a fair few rivals in this class still hide drums back there. Kerb weight comes to 1,157 kg, or 1,190 if you went for the CVT. Light cars go easy on brakes, tyres and fuel, which isn’t marketing, just physics.

FAQ

Is it petrol, hybrid or electric? Petrol, full stop. One 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine, no battery, nothing to plug in anywhere. Geely did build an electric car on this exact body once and sold it as the Maple 30X, so the confusion is fair enough — but what we ship is pure combustion, manual or CVT.

Why does it look exactly like a Geely Vision X3? Because it is one. Livan is Geely’s tie-up with Lifan, and this is the Vision X3 Pro with different badges on it. The same car has gone out as a Maple and as the Geely GX3 Pro elsewhere. Mechanically nothing at all changes, which you’ll appreciate the first time you order spare parts.

Will a family fit in it? Four adults on a normal run, no problem. Rear legroom off a 2,480 mm wheelbase is adequate rather than generous, I’d say, though headroom is genuinely good — tall flat roof helps. The boot is the bit that surprises people. 400 litres, and deeper than most things this length.

Can the Livan X3 Pro be imported to my country? Most markets, yes. It already sells in Russia, Central Asia, North and West Africa, the Gulf and bits of Latin America, and the 103 hp European-spec version has been homologated for the EU.
